Import Day One Entries, Each at Its MinuteComing soon

Years of writing in Day One can come with you. Export it once as JSON, choose the file, and see what it holds before anything leaves your device.

Coming soon: it is built, and a small group is trying it before it opens to everyone. Start free now and it will turn up in your account.

Benefits

At the minute you wrote it

Day One knows the time and the timezone of every entry, and Pensio keeps both, so a late night stays on the night it was, in the order it happened.

Photos and voice notes too

Photos arrive in the entry where you put them, iPhone photos included. Voice notes keep their recording and are written down so you can search them.

Places, weather and tags kept

Each becomes a short line at the end of the entry. What cannot come across, videos and PDFs, is named in a report with the day it belongs to.

Once, and reversible

Choose the same export twice and nothing is brought in twice. If you change your mind, one button removes the import and nothing you wrote in Pensio.

Import from Day One

Bring your Day One journal across, every entry at the moment you wrote it.

Years of writing in Day One can come with you. Export it once as JSON, choose the file, and every entry arrives at the moment you wrote it, with its photos, voice notes, places and weather, ready for Explore, your insights and search.

An example

A late entry in Day One
“Home at last. Twenty past midnight, and the street was quiet.” Written at 00:20 in Lisbon, with one photo and the tag Home.
  • Date the day and minute you wrote it
  • Photo in the entry, where you put it

It arrives on that day at 00:20, not the day before that the export's clock in UTC would give it, with the photo where you put it and “Home” as a line of the entry.

What you can do

See what is in it before anything leaves your device
The export is read in your browser first: each journal's entries, the months they cover, and how many photos and voice notes, before you choose Import.
Bring several journals at once
A Day One export holds every journal you exported. Each entry keeps its journal in the import record, so a later export of the same journals brings in only what is new.
Leave and come back
If an import stops, choose the same export again. What already came across is skipped, and nothing is brought in twice.
Take it back
For 30 days, one button removes everything an import brought in and nothing you wrote in Pensio. You can keep the entries you changed since.

How It Works

1

Export from Day One as JSON

On an iPhone: Day One, then Settings, then Import/Export, then Export, then JSON. On a Mac: File, then Export, then JSON. It saves a ZIP with your photos and voice notes inside.

2

Choose the file in Pensio

Your browser reads the export first and shows how many entries, which months, and how many photos and voice notes it holds.

3

Import it

Entries come across one by one. If the page closes, choose the same export again and it carries on where it stopped.

4

Read the report

It says what came across and names everything that could not, such as videos, with its day.

Use Cases

Opening to a small group of accounts first.

Leaving Day One without losing a decade

Every entry, at its minute, with its photos, ready for Explore and search the same day.

Moving to Android or the web

Day One is at home on Apple devices. Your entries can come with you to a phone or a laptop that is not one.

Keeping both for a while

Import now and keep writing in Day One. A later export brings in only what is new or changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I move my Day One journal to another app?
Export it from Day One as JSON (on iPhone: Settings, then Import/Export, then Export, then JSON; on a Mac: File, then Export, then JSON), then choose that ZIP on Pensio’s import page. Every entry arrives at the day and time you wrote it, with its photos and voice notes.
Does it keep the time of day and the timezone?
Yes. Day One records both, so an entry written at 00:20 in Lisbon lands on that day at 00:20, not on the day before that a clock in UTC would give it.
What about places, weather, tags and stars?
Places, weather and tags become short lines at the end of the entry, so nothing you recorded disappears. Stars and pins are not carried over.
Does it keep my photos and voice notes?
Yes. Photos go into the entry where you put them, including iPhone photos. A voice note keeps its recording and is written down so it can be searched. Videos and PDFs stay in your export, and the report names each one.
What if I export from the Day One web app?
The web app exports one journal at a time, as JSON. Import each ZIP in turn; nothing is brought in twice, and each entry remembers which journal it came from.
Can I undo an import?
Yes, for 30 days. One button removes everything that import brought in and nothing you wrote in Pensio, and you can keep the imported entries you have edited since.
Export as JSON, not PDF
Only Day One's JSON export carries the dates, photos and voice notes. On the web app, export one journal at a time; on a phone or Mac, everything at once.
Voice notes keep their recording
A voice note brought in keeps its audio for as long as the entry exists, on every plan and whatever you chose for your own recordings.
Photos count toward your storage
An import is never stopped for space. If its photos take you past your plan's storage, new photos wait until there is room.
Insights for the most recent 3 months
Weekly and monthly insights are written for your most recent imported months, a few each day once Pensio has read them. Older entries are in Explore and search, without an insight of their own.
People are not linked for you
A name in an imported entry does not connect to someone in your journal until you edit the entry and link them yourself.
