Obsidian Plugin: Sync Your Vault

Keep writing in Obsidian — Pensio adds the intelligence layer. No need to switch tools.

Benefits

Real-Time Sync

Save in Obsidian, and it syncs to Pensio. The plugin detects changes and uploads automatically.

Bulk Upload

Sync your entire vault at once — entries uploaded in chunks of 50 for reliability.

No Lock-In

Your markdown files stay in your vault, unchanged. Pensio reads them — it never modifies them.

Secure Auth

JWT tokens stored in Obsidian SecretStorage. Automatic refresh — no password prompts.

Obsidian

Native plugin — keep writing in Obsidian, we add the intelligence

Keep writing in your vault. The plugin sends each note up; Pensio reads it, never changes it, and the file in your vault stays the original.

An example

A note in your vault
2026-03-14 Sunday call.md, with date: 2026-03-14 in its front matter and @Mom in the text.
  • Date from front matter
  • Editable here no

The plugin sends it up when you save. Pensio dates it from the front matter first, the filename second, the file’s own time last; connects Mom; and files it as an Obsidian entry you can read here but only change there.

What you can do

Pair with a setup code
Eight characters, good for five minutes, usable once. The plugin never sees your password.
Sync now, one file, or everything
Three commands in Obsidian. A whole vault goes up in chunks of fifty.
Keep writing in Obsidian
With auto-sync on, a note goes up when you save it.
Bring your people
A note in your People folder with relationship: family in its front matter becomes a person here.
Mirror deletes, if you turn it on
Off by default. On, deleting a note in your vault deletes the entry the plugin made from it, and nothing else.
Stop it
Settings, then Connected apps, then Stop it. Connect again to resume.

How It Works

1

Install the plugin

In Obsidian, open Settings → Community plugins, search for "Pensio Journaling Sync", and click Install, then Enable.

2

Connect your account

Open Connect Obsidian in your Pensio settings, generate a one-time setup code, and enter it in the plugin. No copying long tokens — each device gets its own secure connection, stored in Obsidian SecretStorage.

3

Sync your vault

Click "Sync Now" to upload your existing entries in chunks of 50. From then on, every save syncs automatically in the background.

4

Access intelligence on the web

Your entries appear in Pensio with emotions extracted, insights generated, and the Explore AI ready to answer questions — all while your markdown files stay untouched in Obsidian.

Use Cases

The Obsidian plugin bridges local-first writing with cloud-powered intelligence.

Obsidian power users

Keep your local-first workflow intact. Write in Obsidian as you always have — Pensio adds the intelligence layer without changing your files or your habits.

Vault migration

Already have years of journal entries in Obsidian? Bulk sync uploads everything at once. Your historical entries get emotion analysis and become searchable via the AI.

Multi-device journaling

Write in Obsidian on desktop, access your journal and AI insights via the Pensio web app on mobile. Best of both worlds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Claude read my Obsidian vault?
Through Pensio, yes. The plugin syncs your vault into Pensio, and Pensio can then be connected to Claude as a custom MCP connector — so Claude answers from what you wrote in Obsidian, without you pasting any of it. It is read-only: it can search and quote, never edit a note.
Is there an Obsidian MCP server?
Pensio works as one. Rather than exposing your filesystem, the plugin syncs your vault to Pensio and Pensio speaks the Model Context Protocol — so the assistant reads through a connection you approved, with a limit you chose, and you can stop it in one click.
Can I connect Obsidian to ChatGPT the same way?
It needs ChatGPT Plus or above with Developer Mode turned on. Neither ChatGPT Free nor ChatGPT Go can add a custom connector at all. Claude needs neither of those, and is the route we have walked end to end.
Does Pensio change the Markdown files in my vault?
No. Pensio reads your notes and never writes to them, and a connected assistant cannot either — read-only is enforced in the database, not by a setting. Your files stay exactly as you left them.
Pensio never writes to your vault
Nothing here changes a file there. Not a sync, not an edit, not a delete.
A synced entry cannot be edited here
The next sync would overwrite it. Change the note in Obsidian instead.
A wikilink can make a person. An @ cannot.
In a synced note, a name in double brackets can create a person. A name after @ only matches one that already exists.
The connection is its own
Stopping it does not sign you out anywhere. Signing out everywhere does stop it.
