Getting the Most From the Five-Minute Journal Template
The five-minute journal works because it removes every excuse. Three short prompts in the morning to set your focus, three at night to close the day — no blank page, no pressure to write beautifully. The constraint is the feature: it is short enough to actually do every day, which is the only thing that makes journaling pay off.
Tips & common pitfalls
- Keep it to five minutes. The whole point is a habit you never skip — if it creeps to fifteen, you will eventually stop.
- Be specific in the gratitude lines. “The quiet coffee before everyone woke up” beats “my family” because concrete detail trains your brain to notice more of it.
- Write the morning section before you touch your phone. Setting your own intention before reacting to everyone else’s is most of the benefit.
- At night, the “what would have made today better” line is for learning, not self-criticism. Keep it practical and kind.
Example entry
Grateful for: the quiet 20 minutes before everyone woke up.
What would make today great: finish the deck draft before lunch.
Affirmation: I can do hard things one block at a time.
--- Evening ---
What went well: shipped the draft; good call with Mom.
What would have made today better: a real lunch away from the screen.
